If you are old enough to have owned a pair of tweezers in the 90’s or 00’s there is a good chance that instead of channeling Edward Scissor Hands, sculpting beautiful arches when grooming your eyebrows, you re-enacted the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, not resting until you obliterated those innocent brows. Fortunately, trends change. Now, in 2021, Leatherhead is no longer an eyebrow guru, stick brows are deceased, and we are fully embracing big beautiful and fluffy brows.
Suman Jafaf, CEO and founder of Brows by Suman, on the other hand, was never held hostage to any craze, or phase. - What is microblading?
“Microblading is a technique that transforms unruly and/or sparse brows into well-groomed, refined sophisticated-looking arches that frame and lift the face.
- What type of eyebrows are best for microblading?
There’s no one-type of brows best for microblading. My treatments are bespoke meaning the technique differs depending on what the brow needs are. I offer Microblading to clients with very fair hair to clients with dark brows. Each type of brow achieves their own amazingly unique result. But of course, the most obvious result is when you go from sparse to lovely fluffy thick brows – I love seeing my clients face light up after their transformation.
- Is it painful?
Not at all. My clients have the best quality numbing cream applied and they experience no discomfort whatsoever.
- Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime with microblading. The treatment will go through a few stages before reaching the full and fluffy result.
- Stage 1: Just after the treatment – You will love your freshly Microbladed eyebrows!
- Stage 2 and 3: first and second after treatment – your eyebrows may appear darker and then begin scabbing (this is totally normal!)
- Stage 4: You might think your brows have faded.
- Stage 5: Your eyebrows will look much better and you will be due your top up!
- Stage 6: The end result!
- How long does the appearance of microblading last for? What treatments are available to help maintain the fluffy, thick, and defined appearance in between microblading appointments?
Microblading lasts up to 15-20 months. During this time, your eyebrows will look full and defined. It’s important, however, to note that it’s not necessarily a treatment that means you stop caring for your brows. Yes, it’s a game changer, but to keep them looking clean and pristine I recommend having them shaped and tinted in between microblading appointments.
- Whose eyebrows aren’t suitable for microblading? Which treatments/products would you suggest as an alternative?
Microblading is generally available to everyone. All new clients are patch tested before to ensure they’re not allergic to the pigmented colour. Microblading is not suitable for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Microshading is perfect for my lovely clients with oiler skin types and darker skin tones. Microshading is also a semi-permanent makeup which is applied with an electric pen that’s creates a beautiful and velvety airbrush effect. This differs from microblading which instead uses a scalpel dipped in ink to create hair strokes that give the illusion of a fuller brow.
But let’s get more into the details; black skin can benefit from microshading because the darkest available ink used for microblading isn’t always visible.
Oily skin benefits from microshading because the skin holds the colour much better than the ink used for microblading.
