Plant-Based Milk Alternatives for Healthy Living

The plant-based diet has been hot on the dietary scene in recent years. Everyone from devoted animal lovers to trendy teens, even going as far as the ‘boys that bulk’ (That’s right! The animal protein lovers have converted too!).

Since the release of documentaries such as ‘What The Health’, avid meat eaters have taken on board the health and environmental benefits from consuming a plant-based diet, and choosing to swap a few items in their shopping cart for vegan alternatives. One of the first, and maybe most well-known, of the plant-based alternatives to sky rocket in supermarket sales was plant-based milk.

Milk is usually a core staple in many households. I remember being a child and my mum’s top items on her shopping list were always milk, bread and cheese (and as my sisters and I grew older, I’m sure wine made it’s way higher up that list, hers not ours!) Is anyone else dreaming about wine and vegan cheese now? Mmmm… Anyway, let’s get back to the point…

Gone are the days where milk alternatives were scares and our only choice was to raid the dustiest shelf in the funky smelling health shop for a warm carton of something deathly tasting. These days milk alternatives are sold in most supermarkets and the dairy-free aisle puts the sad looking cows milk shelf to shame. In fact, there’s so much choice it can be overwhelming when stood in front of… wait for it… Almond, banana and coconut milk, date, hemp and hazelnut milk, rice, soy and oat milk, cashew, macadamia and quinoa milk, coconut with almond, sweetened and unsweetened milk. Seriously! We go absolutely nuts for anything we can squeeze ‘milk’ from, but what do we put it in?

Hold tight and keep reading because i’m going to tell you my favourite brands, where you can buy them and what you should put them on.
